In Review: Motherland: Fort Salem (S3 – Ep8) Petra’s Favorite Pen

The unit races to rescue a captured ally.

Synopsis: In Petra’s Favorite Pen The unit races to rescue a captured ally. Alder and Tally journey to retrieve the penultimate piece of the First Song. Fort Salem finds itself under Camarilla control.

The Story

Having used her sight in last week’s show in order to find the Ice Witch who knows the First Song. Tally and Alder head to Germany to try and get the Witch to agree to teach them the song. Meanwhile back at the Cessions Militia HQ, a captured soldier reveals where the Camarilla is holding Scylla, which prompts Raelle, Abigail, and Adil to attempt a daring rescue mission.

Meanwhile, Anacostia Quartermain meets up with Nicte in the hopes of recruiting her help in order to find the Marshall and the President.

The Acting

We get some brilliant performances in this week’s story. I particularly enjoyed seeing Taylor Hickson’s Raelle in action again and particularly enjoyed the scene where she demonstrates how she is able to influence the weak-minded. In this case, she convinces Scylla’s potential torturer into freeing Scylla by telling him about the deadly mushrooms that are growing on his insides.

Also, we get a brilliant moment with Catherine Lough Haggquist and Aaron Douglas where Petra uses her favorite pen to give Colonel Jarrett a serious heart attack.

Added to this Ashley Nicole Williams gets a brilliant moment as Abigail when she pretty much takes out a large chunk of her former army officers when she witnesses them killing their own cadets.

Petra’s Favorite Pen does a solid job of building toward the story’s endpoint, which we’ll see in a couple of weeks’ time. I really enjoyed the little bit of a flashback at the start of the episode where we see The Ice Witch running away from some soldiers. This sets up the scene later on where Tally strikes a deal with her. Also enjoyable was Raelle’s rescue of Scylla as well as Petra’s realization that her army is getting shafted by the Camarilla, which leads to her deadly use of a pen. Proving once and for all. That the pen is mightier than the sword.

Overall. A fantastic episode, which leaves our heroes in a tricky situation that sees them surrender to Petra. Just how they will get out of all of this and defeat the Camarilla remains to be seen. I can’t wait to find out.
