Synopsis: THE GUARDIANS CLEANSED?! KNULL and his dragons are cleansing entire worlds of life. SPARTAX is their next target – and the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY can’t save it alone. It’s a good day for the return of the legendary STAR-LORD… Meanwhile, as the team battle cosmic horror, something worse is waiting – as the clock ticks down to the Last Stand in… THREE…
The Story
The Guardians have a new enemy. And he is systematically destroying planets one at a time. Furthermore, his next target is Spartax. With a planet in imminent danger. Nova, Hercules, and Moondragon head off to try and defend the world. As they arrive they meet up with Rocket Racoon who is as much in the dark as they are about how they can stop Knull and his Dragons. The Chips are down, but there is still hope because Starlord has arrived.
The Artwork
Juann Cabal waste little time in getting to the point with his artwork for this issue. To begin with, the full page image of Knull serves as an imposing warning of just what type of villain The Guardians are facing. Likewise, the image of Knull on the pad that nova is holding onto during the meeting is pretty scary. This issue is full of this sort of imagery, which does a great job of showing us the threat that our heroes are up against. It is also the perfect setup for the reintroduction of a new and more powerful Starlord.
Overall
This is a brilliant issue, which features the long-awaited reunion between Starlord and the rest of the Guardians. I loved Rocket Racoon’s reaction the most. When he wonders if his friend has retained all his faculties. You can always count on Rocket to voice what is being unsaid by all of the other characters.
Also done well. Is the introduction of Knull at the start of the book. The text that introduces him works brilliantly with the imagery that Cabal provides. I also loved the villainous monologue that Knull reels off when Starlord and Nova are coming at him.
Overall. A fantastic issue with a brilliantly executed reintroduction of Starlord into the team.
