Synopsis: This week in Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, It’s a race against the clock as Sam, Elle, and Gizmo battle fearsome yet adorable monsters on their way to the Valley of Jade as long as Greene and the Gremlins don’t catch up with them first.

The Stories

Never Squeeze a Fox sees Sam, Elle, Gizmo and the Goddess Nüwa having to run for their lives as they look to outrun both The Spirit Foxes and Riley Green and his army of Gremlins. The only problem being is that Nüwa is unable to use her powers cos she has been poisoned. Thankfully, Nüwa knows enough to help Sam, Elle, and Gizmo to get to the administrator who has the magical powers needed to get them to the Valley of Jade. But getting there is no simple matter given that pretty much every being in the Bizarre Market wants to eat Gizmo.

In Never Hug a Mogwai Sam, Elle, and Gizmo have safely made it to the Valley of Jade and are celebrating somewhat prematurely. Unbeknownst to them. Riley Green and his Gremlins have bested the Goddess and taken her powers, which means Riley Green can create his own portals and go anywhere he wants to. However, there could be a little hope for our heroes as Elle has found The Clay Dagger that Nüwa used to create the world and all that lives in it. The question is. Will Sam have the confidence and belief in himself to properly use the dagger and save The Jade Valley?

Voice Acting

Much as in previous weeks. The Voice cast brings their best performances and we get some fun moments from Sandra Oh as the Goddess Nüwa as she lets rip with her anger towards humans in general and is particularly down on Elle because she recognizes the selfish streak in her. Thankfully, things come full circle when Elle commits a selfless act, which redeems her somewhat in Nüwa’s eyes.

Matthew Rhys continues to chew the scenery with his villainous portrayal of Riley Green. Though he is much more of a prominent figure in Never Hug a Mogwai.

Overall

This week’s episodes linked the story arc up really well as we see things take a particularly sinister turn toward the close of the second episode, which leaves Sam, his parents, and Elle in a bit of a jam as they have no magic to help them. It’s a cliffhanger that whets the appetite for next week’s finale, which I suspect may well have an element of tragedy to it.

Aside from my above predictions on where the story might go. I was also impressed with the magic battle between Riley Green and Nüwa toward the end of the first of the two episodes. Added to this great battle, which felt a little like an old west-style gun fight, but with magic. We also get treated to some awesome incidental music throughout with the Gremlins theme tune mixed in with some really pleasant and mysterious Chinese music.
