The Story

In the aftermath of their daring escape from Elmira, profound revelations and emotional reckonings come to the fore. Marie Moreau, along with Jordan, Emma, and her resurrected sister Annabeth, flee the facility in a stolen van. Their journey leads them to an abandoned library, where they regroup and reflect on their harrowing experiences.

As tensions rise, Marie’s powers come into sharper focus. Her ability to resurrect Annabeth not only underscores her immense potential but also brings unsettling truths to light. Former Vought CEO Stan Edgar reappears, revealing that both Marie and Homelander were survivors of Project Odessa, a hidden initiative aimed at creating god-like supes. This revelation casts a long shadow over Marie’s sense of identity and purpose.

Further complicating matters, Edgar introduces Zoe Neuman, a formidable supe with connections to Marie’s past at Red River Orphanage. Zoe’s presence hints at a deeper conspiracy and the lengths to which Vought and Cipher will go to harness and control superpowered individuals.

Overwhelmed by the weight of these truths and the fear of becoming what she despises, Marie makes a pivotal decision. She chooses to separate herself from her friends and allies, embarking on a solitary quest for answers and self-understanding. It is also revealed that the burned man Cipher has been caring for could well be the legendary Charles Godolkin.

Acting

This episode sees the return of Giancarlo Esposito as Stan Edgar, a role he originated in the early seasons of The Boys. The scenes where Edgar tries to win Marie’s trust by cooking a meal for her and her friends are a lot of fun to watch, gradually revealing more of Cipher’s backstory and how everything ties into Godolkin University and the Odessa program. Edgar mainly serves to provide exposition, but there’s no doubt he’ll play a larger role in future episodes.

Keeya King delivers a solid performance as Marie’s sister, Annabeth Moreau, who is also revealed to be a supe—though not as powerful as her sister. The scene where Annabeth shares a memory of Marie with Zoe Neuman (Olivia Morandin) plays out brilliantly, though I still can’t bring myself to fully trust Zoe, given her mother’s history.

Overall

This episode sets the stage for a high-stakes finale, where allegiances will be tested, and the true nature of power and identity will be explored.
