Synopsis: In The Paths That Choose Us, Gaal faces the Mule’s ability to convert others. Dusk takes extreme action. Demerzel seeks to understand what lies ahead.

The Story

Picking up where last week left off, Gaal and her team land on New Terminus to execute the first part of their plan: lure Warden Greer into overconfidence and capture her. When Gaal pushes her mind into Greer’s, she is horrified to witness the woman die whispering, “I’ve never known such love.” The Mule’s conversion isn’t mere loyalty—it’s devotion, and that terrifies her. Still, Gaal presses forward with Han Pritcher, Ebling, Toran, and Magnifico, knowing the Mule’s reach is spreading like wildfire.

Far away, Brother Dusk faces the Galactic Council. They beg him to yield Trantor to the Mule, but he responds with annihilation. Using the Novacula, he wipes out entire systems in an instant. Worlds vanish, millions perish, and the surviving council members break down in tears, watching their homes destroyed before their eyes. Accused of genocide, Dusk is unflinching: empires, he argues, are machines designed to crush.

In Mycogen, Brother Day claws his way back from humiliation, killing Sunmaster-18 and carrying a severed robot head like a grim trophy—one he intends to present to Demerzel.

Back on New Terminus, Gaal enters the Vault, where Hari Seldon’s hologram demands a body in exchange for help. Desperate, she agrees, striking a bargain with a man long dead.

Meanwhile on Trantor, Demerzel drifts through the Hall of Cleons, wrestling with the weight of programming versus freedom. Within the Prime Radiant, she meets Kalle, who insists that choice need not precede action, nor be carried alone.

Across the galaxy, paths diverge—some chosen, others chosen for them.

Acting

Terrence Mann delivers a steely and unforgettable performance as Dusk. The moment he makes contact with the Mule and, without hesitation, destroys entire star systems in front of both the Mule and the Council members who urged him to surrender Trantor is utterly devastating. It may be the darkest and most sinister act ever portrayed in a television series. The remorseless coldness in Dusk’s expression as he wields the black hole–powered superweapon is chilling, a stark reminder of the brutal nature of empire.

Meanwhile, Lou Llobell continues to shine as Gaal. Her performance anchors the emotional core of the episode, as her journey toward leading the Second Foundation reaches a crucial turning point. We leave her poised to confront the Mule, her resolve solidifying even as the shadow of his influence grows stronger.

Overall

This penultimate episode does exactly what it needs to: move the pieces into place for next week’s season finale. Gaal stands where she must, with Han Pritcher and Hari Seldon at her side, ready to challenge the Mule’s growing dominion. Demerzel finds herself at a rare crossroads, questioning her own purpose in ways that unsettle her usual certainty. The Mule, meanwhile, waits with cocky arrogance, convinced that Gaal’s every move will only confirm his superiority. And Dusk, having scorched his bond with Quint, steels himself to face death in isolation.
