Synopsis: In The Shape of Time, a long-awaited reunion turns violent. Day searches for Song. On New Terminus, the Vault opens—and the Mule takes aim.
The Story
Picking up from last week’s thrilling cliffhanger, Gaal Dornick is confronted by Demerzel, who is furious that Gaal involved Brother Dawn in her plan. Gaal explains that discovering Demerzel was a robot was an integral part of creating psychohistory with Hari Seldon. Demerzel reveals her deep connection to the Seldon Plan and mourns Brother Dawn’s death. During their intense encounter, Gaal demonstrates her ability to perceive time as a malleable shape, showing Demerzel visions of the Mule’s threat to the galaxy. Though skeptical, Demerzel spares Gaal’s life.
Meanwhile, on Terminus, tensions rise as the Foundation prepares for a major event. Magnifico’s performance briefly unites the factions, but the peace shatters when the Vault opens and the Mule’s mentalic powers cause Foundation ships to destroy one another. Hari Seldon’s hologram appears, but chaos escalates.
In a personal subplot, Brother Day searches for Song, only to discover that she has no memory of their past and has built a new life with her partner, leaving him heartbroken. The episode ends with the galaxy on the brink of turmoil as the Mule’s influence spreads, and the future of the Foundation remains uncertain.
Acting
Lou Llobell and Laura Birn deliver brilliant performances in the tense confrontation between Demerzel and Gaal. The scene where Demerzel grabs Gaal by the neck, holding her in place while expressing her grief over Dawn’s death, is genuinely frightening. Llobell sells the moment perfectly, balancing bemusement and fear on her face. Lee Pace also gives a solid performance as Day. The heartbreak of being rejected by Song is portrayed with nuance and depth, making it feel fully earned given all that Day has endured in his attempts to reconnect with her.
All the performances in this episode are strong, and the story teeters on a knife’s edge as the Mule prepares to seize Terminus.
Overall
A strong episode that builds brilliantly on last week’s events and brings the Mule’s confrontation with the First Foundation to a head.
