Synopsis: In When a Book Finds You, An unexpected alliance is formed. Pritcher, Bayta, and Toran come face-to-face with the Mule. Demerzel seeks spiritual guidance.
The Story
“When a Book Finds You” begins with a flashback in which we see Brother Dawn visiting the Imperial Library to request a banned version of Hari Seldon’s writings on psychohistory. As he inspects the manuscript, the librarian informs him that they were instructed to direct anyone showing interest in the document to meet someone in the city.
Later, Brother Dawn follows the lead and meets with Gaal Dornick. She comments on his disguise, warns him about the rising threat of the Mule, and urges him to call a meeting of the Council—stressing that this might be their only opportunity to act while the Mule is still relatively isolated.
Meanwhile, Pritcher, Bayta, and Toran continue their efforts to track down the Mule. When Pritcher approaches the warlord directly, he is struck by the Mule’s powerful mind control and is forced to flee, escaping in his ship. Bayta and Toran take a more covert approach. They manage to liberate Magnifico Giganticus from the Mule’s inner circle, though not without consequence—Toran is injured during their escape, but they just manage to get away.
Later, the Mule begins making bold moves to expand his territory. This becomes a source of great concern for Brother Dawn, who calls a meeting with Brother Day and Brother Dusk to discuss the threat and request a formal Council session. However, only Brother Day, the “middle child” in the Dynasty, has the authority to call the Council—and he flatly refuses.
Overall, this episode brilliantly illustrates the fragile nature of power structures and the complexities of loyalty. Brother Dawn’s secret alliance with Gaal marks a pivotal shift in challenging the long-standing imperial doctrines. At the same time, the Mule’s rise as a powerful and unpredictable adversary signals the beginning of a wider galactic upheaval.
Acting
Cassian Bilton puts in a solid performance this week as Brother Dawn, who has clearly become the most progressive member of the leadership on Trantor. He seems to be the only one with any real grasp of what’s unfolding across the galaxy. Dawn’s meeting with Gaal in the teahouse is brilliantly portrayed—both Lou Llobell and Bilton go all out to sell the importance of this encounter as a major turning point in the storyline.
Once again, Pilou Asbæk is both terrifying and compelling as the Mule. The scene in which he cheerfully peels the skin from Toran’s hand with a very sharp object—something disturbingly close to a potato peeler—had me covering my eyes. I guess I’m getting squeamish in my old age.
Overall
“When a Book Finds You” continues to build on the themes and storylines established at the beginning of the season. Watching Brother Dawn’s journey as he develops an understanding of psychohistory is fascinating—he’s clearly evolving beyond the rigid mindset of the Empire. In contrast, Brother Day’s descent into a more hedonistic lifestyle serves as the perfect counterpoint. This storyline takes an intriguing twist when we learn that his girlfriend secretly practices a long-banned religion that worships robots—a faith outlawed over 2,000 years ago.
This revelation ultimately saves her life when Demerzel, upon discovering the truth, chooses to spare her. It raises compelling questions about Demerzel’s role in the story moving forward. So far, she’s had surprisingly little screen time this season, but her presence looms large. One can’t help but wonder how she’ll act as the power dynamics continue to shift.
