Synopsis: After Sara’s (Caity Lotz) encounter with Mallus, the Legends are paid a visit by John Constantine (guest star Matt Ryan), a demonologist detective. The Legends agree to accompany him to a present-day psychiatric hospital and they are surprised to discover who Constantine is trying to help. During the exorcism, Sara, Leo (guest star Wentworth Miller) and Constantine go missing, leaving Ray (Brandon Routh) and Zari (Tala Ashe) to try to take care of Constantine’s client. Meanwhile, Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nate (Nick Zano) once again come face to face with Kuasa. Dominic Purcell also stars.
Review: This is the episode I and many others have been waiting for. Let me address other things, though, before I discuss a certain mage’s search for light.
First, this is where viewers regrettably bid adieu to Wentworth Miller as Leo Snart. If this is, indeed, the last we see of him as any iteration of Captain/Citizen Cold, I’d like to say thank you to Mr. Miller for being a presence we will miss.
Second, I really appreciated getting to know Nora Darhk better. Viewers needed this context to appreciate the depth of a child’s desperate love for her father. Moreover, viewers needed to understand the pathetic limits of a father’s love for his daughter. I hope this arc culminates in epiphany and some kind of growth for one or both of the Darhks, because theirs is probably the bleakest parent/child dynamic in the Arrowverse, and that’s saying a great deal.
Third, I’m I fan of forward momentum, and there was forward momentum with the Amaya/Kuasa/Zari storyline. This episode gave Kuasa more depth than she’s had since her original introduction in the Vixen web series. If Amaya and Zari can find even half a loophole in their family tragedies while engaging in the next phase of their quest, I’ll be extremely happy.
Now, let me talk about John Constantine. Matt Ryan continued to be perfection in the role. and he fit seamlessly into the existing team dynamic. Do I want the unresolved storylines from the Constantine series dealt with and further individual storylines created? Certainly, I do. However, the Arrowverse writers can craft those plot threads and also have Constantine pop up on other shows. A multiverse allows for non-binary narrative solutions after all. Constantine’s presence on Legends of Tomorrow proves my point, because “Daddy Darhkest” was one of the best episodes of Constantine that we’ve been given yet.
For the record, I ship Sara with both Constantine and Ava. Sara allows for non-binary narrative solutions after all.
