Synopsis: A new Dalek masterplan threatens the galaxy. A deadly alliance is building. Can Bernice Summerfield save us?
Review: Doctor Who: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 09: The Dalek Eternity 4 offered listeners a darkly upbeat ending just in time for Christmas. Along the way, the writers set up future stories that I’m looking forward to.
The Story
Writers Patrick O’Connor and Ash Darby crafted a Dalek masterclass in paying off set up story elements. Indeed, they managed to surprise me with inventive call backs and character beats.
“Vizier” by Patrick O’Connor was a delightful exploration of narrative drive through villainous monologuing. O’Connor simply let the the Oldest speak, and the story fell into place as she gleefully revealed her manipulations.
As effective as that approach was, though, O’Connor knew not to let the Oldest say too much. Two seasons later, we still don’t know who she is, and that was a perfect choice.
“Emperor” by Ash Darby demonstrated an additional strength in the writing. This story, along with previous installments, gave listeners deftly balanced dramedy.
For example, Starll walked an extraordinarily delicate line between nihilistic grief and barely suppressed elation. Both extremes were internally consistent and affecting.
Acting
The entire cast was excellent. That said, three performances stood out.
First, Dan Starkey continued to be superb as Starll. He simultaneously convey emotional extremes with real care.
Next, leading lady Lisa Bowerman ran the gamut of Benny’s emotions with her usual skill. Bowerman flexed all of her acting muscles, as our heroine processed the scope of the damage.
Last, but not least, Niamh Cusack owned every one of her scenes. She committed to a joyously old-school performance.
Overall
Doctor Who: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 09: The Dalek Eternity 4 was yet another holiday treat from Big Finish. I can’t wait to hear what the new year brings.

I read that Paul Cornell created Bernice Summerfield. Paul Cornell is autistic as many sci-fi fans are so that means Bernice Summerfield is also autistic (or at least autistic coded)!
Sorry for going off topic Raissa but I think they should bring Rose Ayling-Ellis back as the next companion when the TV show starts again. Because then everyone will watch the show like when Billie Piper was cast as Rose Tyler in 2005.
