Synopsis: A new Dalek masterplan threatens the galaxy. A deadly alliance is building. Can Bernice Summerfield save us?
Review: Doctor Who: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 09: The Dalek Eternity 1 picked up where the previous box set left off. This time around, the writers gave us a much edgier outing.
Story
Since their introduction, the Daleks have been an allegory for tyranny and the reactions tyranny inspired. Writers James Goss and Felicia Barker have grandly maintained that tradition.
“The Lonely Bomb” by James Goss showcased Benny, as she ran from the Daleks. I appreciated both her fear and her resolve.
I also really liked the juxtaposition of the Daleks and the Johannes Arsenal. Through them, Goss offered the most pointed commentary on the futility of war.
Along the way, listeners also got more backstory for Nurse. She’s shaping up to be one of my favourite supporting characters.
“Satrap” by Felicia Barker put the spotlight on Secretary Pym. He was very conscious of being left behind to face the Daleks. I really felt for Pym, as he juggled impossible existential mandates.
I honestly don’t know if I would’ve done any better in his place. That said, I marvelled at his outburst when we’re only two episodes into the story.
He’ll have to find a way to relieve the strain. Otherwise, he’ll be catatonic by the finale.
As for the supporting players, the interaction between the Dalek and The Oldest was worth the price alone. I can’t wait for more between them.
Acting
The cast was superb throughout. However, I must give kudos to several performers.
For her part, Rachel Atkins has been absolute gold as Nurse. She’s found the perfect blend of humor, unfathomable depth, and righteous anger.
For his part, Adrian Lukis played Secretary Pym with heart and hysteria. I’m interested to hear how he’ll modulate Pym’s emotions as the story progresses.
Along side her supporting cast, Lisa Bowerman continued to give fans the layered leading lady they love. Benny will continue to strive and thrive in her care.
Overall
Big Finish has started another memorable arc. I can’t wait for Doctor Who: The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 09: The Dalek Eternity 2 next month.

CAREY MULLIGAN AS A REGENERATED UNBOUND DOCTOR! Make it happen Big Finish.
Noooo never. Don’t do it. You can’t as it will reverse the polarity of the neutron flow. 🙂
I was so fond of David Warner’s Unbound Doctor that I’m not ready for recasting yet. Carey Mulligan would be interesting, though.
