In Review: Big Finish: Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: In Name Only

John Banks, Christopher Ryan, and Dan Starkey delivered tour de force performances as this soundscape’s final curtain came down.
Rutans

Synopsis: The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans has been going on for millennia. It’s a terrible conflict with no care for consequences or collateral damage. Billions have died with no end in sight.

From the outside, these battles may seem disconnected. Sometimes, however, there is a common thread. Unpicking that could destroy everything.

In the depths of the Time War, a Rutan attack on a Time Lord facility leads to Gallifrey declaring a vicious reprisal. However, not all Time Lords support the action.

One thinks there’s more to the situation than meets the eye. This Time Lord was once called the Doctor.

Review: Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: In Name Only was a perfectly twisty finale to this arc. To avoid spoiling those twists, though, I won’t be covering the plot in detail.

Story

That said, writer John Dorney used internal logic to his advantage throughout. Consequently, listeners will likely work out how all the pieces fit together for themselves.

In general, Dorney did a remarkable job ensuring there were no loose ends. All story points were accounted for, as a result of close coordination among the writers.

As for the character arcs, Dorney’s best creative choice lay in crafting the War Doctor’s companion. This person was everything the War Doctor could’ve asked for as the situation developed.

Acting

Jonathon Carley continued to impress as the War Doctor. Additionally, Debbie Korley put in a strong performance as the latest Time War top brass to be thoroughly put out by our hero.

Once again, however, I must highlight the actors in Sontaran roles. John Banks, Christopher Ryan, and Dan Starkey delivered tour de force performances as this soundscape’s final curtain came down.

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. You’ve told a truly engaging story in a promising format. I can’t wait for the next arc.
