Synopsis: From a sleepy English village to an asteroid on the edge of creation, Christmas is celebrated across all of time and space. But beneath the snow and behind the tinsel, the monsters are waiting.

Review: Doctor Who: Christmas: It’s a Wonderful War and Other Stories was an unabashed love letter to both the festive season and to the Doctor Who franchise. The writers found the perfect blend of holiday warmth and otherworldly edginess.

Story

Each tale subverted Christmas tropes. Along the way, listeners got deconstructions, reunions, gift giving, and a classic movie homage.

“Unholy Night” by Noga Flaishon was a dark romp with Missy. Through her, Flaishon mercilessly sent up Hallmark Christmas movies.

Everything from the relentless aesthetic to the cookie cutter characterizations was fair game. I laughed out loud when Missy asked, “Just what big city do you think I’m from?”

“Legacy of Blood” by Julian Richards was a bitter sweet farewell to Jago & Litefoot. I loved how Richards allowed Ellie to both grieve and honor their memories.

I also truly appreciated the genuinely surprising character interactions. They lead to deep explorations of grief, joy, and Doctor Who lore.

“Presents of Mind” by Mark Wright reunited Smith & Sullivan. Sarah Jane, Harry, K9, and Aunt Lavinia had a cool Yule.

In the process, Wright explored memory and miscommunication. He also peppered the story with wonderful character beats and unwavering affection.

“It’s a Wonderful War” by Jonathan S Powell offered listeners the latest homage to It’s A Wonderful Life. It also offered the Eighth Doctor his latest chance to outwit the darkness of the Time War.

Unfortunately, I can’t say more than that without spoiling more surprising plot twists and character interactions. In the end, the story made my heart both wistful and glad.

Acting

The entire cast was superb. That said, I must single out the very welcome mystery guest stars in “Legacy of Blood” and “It’s a Wonderful War.”

They bought depth and tenderness to the darker themes. They were like fine wines at the Christmas feast.

There needs to be a Christmas episode where 8 meets the Shalka Doctor. Great review Raissa.
