In Review: Big Finish: Dark Gallifrey: The Meddling Monks Part 2

Synopsis: The mysteries of Dark Gallifrey continue to unfold. 

The Meddling Monk and the Meddling Nun are stranded on Earth with a broken TARDIS. Worse still, they find themselves involved in a series of odd escapades.

They’re hosting an evening soirée and taking part in the local talent show. However, the greatest challenge is still to come.

Review: Dark Gallifrey: The Meddling Monks Part 2 brought darker and deadlier laughs. Dorney reminded listeners that comedy is tragedy plus Time Lords.

Story

I won’t detail the plots of “Monky Nuts” or “Monky Magic” by John Dorney. Suffice to say, there was meta commentary on everything, including meta commentary.

As the stories progressed the body count rose. Consequently, the Monk and the Nun were forced to face reality.

Unfortunately, they realized that facing reality was only step one. Actually finding reality was going to be the hard part.

In short, these two tales were the perfect mid-point prior to next month’s finale. The Monk and the Nun escaped the comedy trope traps just in time to run for their lives.

Acting

Once again, the cast was superb. That said, I must give kudos to three performances.

For his part, John Finnemore was pitch perfect as the tone shifted. He thoroughly embraced both the comedy and the existential conundrum.

As wonderful as Finnemore was, however, this installment belonged to Rufus Hound and Gemma Whelan. Their chemistry and comedic timing were incredible throughout.

Additionally, they really sold the dire peril the Monk and Nun were in by the end. I hope listeners will get other opportunities to hear their marvelous double act after next month.

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. Dark Gallifrey: The Meddling Monks Part 2 was everything a cliff-hanger needed to be.

Happily, it looks like some version of my theory looks to be correct. I can’t wait to find out how near the mark I am.
