Synopsis: In Dark Gallifrey: Morbius Part 3 things turn dark, and you’re all alone, there is one traveller of time and space — a wanderer in the fourth dimension — a renegade Time Lord — who will always be there to bring back the light.
Of course, not all Time Lords can be heroes.
Morbius has been brought back to life on the Isle of the Dead. However, a desperate Captain Argento has called for help and received an unlikely ally.
Here is a stranger who knows the tyrant of old and is the only one who can put his plans on ice. But perhaps even the Doctor cannot stop the threat of Dark Gallifrey.
Review: Dark Gallifrey: Morbius Part 3 offered an excellent end to the stand-alone story. Additionally, writer Tim Foley dropped tantalizing breadcrumbs for the rest of the larger series.
Story
Foley crafted wonderful twists in this tale. Those twists were both surprising, yet internally consistent.
I especially loved the choices he made for our hero. Foley deftly managed to present the Fourth Doctor through a different lens without departing from his core character.
The Doctor’s confrontation with Morbius was perfectly realized. However, it could only have worked in audio.
I also appreciated the necessarily bitter-sweet choice he made with Gilda. It was the only path for her.
As for the bread crumbs, I’m glad Dark Gallifrey is more than a title. Indeed, I hope that Big Finish’s future revelations will allow a modern Doctor to save Gallifrey once more.
Acting
The entire cast was superb. That said, there were several stand out performances.
First, Tom Baker twinkled and beamed throughout. For her part, Rachel Atkins brilliantly pitched her performance to contrast his lighter tones.
That said, the soundscape belonged to Samuel West. He obviously had a blast playing three iterations of the titular maniac.
Overall
Thank you. Big Finish. I can’t wait for more of Dark Gallifrey and how everything will connect in the end.
