Heroes and Nashville Star Hayden Panettiere Dies Aged 36

Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known to genre fans as the seemingly indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes, has sadly died at the age of 36.

Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, in South Carolina, just days before what would have been her 37th birthday. Her death was confirmed by her family through her representative. At the time of writing, no cause of death has been announced and an investigation remains ongoing.

For science-fiction fans, Panettiere will forever be associated with one of the defining television catchphrases of the 2000s: “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”

Joining Heroes in 2006, Panettiere played Claire Bennet, a high-school cheerleader who discovered she possessed extraordinary regenerative abilities. Claire quickly became one of the show’s most recognisable characters, with Panettiere’s image becoming virtually synonymous with the series during its hugely successful first season. She remained with Heroes throughout its original four-season run, which concluded in 2010.

Panettiere subsequently demonstrated another side of her talents as ambitious country singer Juliette Barnes in the musical drama Nashville. Appearing in the series from 2012 until 2018, her performance earned considerable acclaim and two Golden Globe nominations.

Her film career was equally varied. After beginning as a child actor, she appeared in Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, Racing Stripes, Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing. Horror audiences also embraced her as the quick-witted Kirby Reed in Wes Craven’s Scream 4, a role she eventually reprised in 2023’s Scream VI. She also provided the voice of Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life.

Panettiere had been acting for virtually her entire life, beginning with commercials as a baby before moving into television and film.

For many genre fans, however, she will always be Claire Bennet: the cheerleader whose survival once held the fate of the entire world in the balance.
