Acclaimed game developer and storyteller Maru Nihoniho, founder of Metia Interactive, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring her latest project, Guardian Maia, to life as a full-length novel.
Set 300 years in the future, Guardian Maia reimagines Aotearoa, New Zealand, as a fractured dystopia shaped by ecological catastrophe and ancient forces. At the heart of the story is Maia, a young Māori guardian who must journey across forbidden lands, face mystical and technological threats, and reclaim her identity to save her people.
Blending Māori mythology, cultural heritage, and science fiction, Guardian Maia offers readers a powerful narrative that bridges the past and future while exploring themes of identity, resilience, and hope.
“I wanted to create a story that I would have loved to read growing up, one where Māori culture isn’t just included, but forms the heart of an epic sci-fi saga,” says Nihoniho. “Guardian Maia is more than a story, it’s a reflection of our resilience, and how our culture not only survives but thrives even in a dystopian future.”
The Kickstarter campaign will fund the publication of the Guardian Maia novel, with stretch goals designed to expand the universe further. Supporters will gain access to exclusive rewards such as behind-the-scenes insights, and unique art inspired by the world of Guardian Maia.
With a strong following built from her award-winning games such as Sparx, Cube and Tākaro, Nihoniho continues her mission to tell authentic, culturally rich stories that inspire and engage audiences worldwide.
