The 2026 slate looks to be stuffed full of star-powered sci-fi flicks. From the colossal franchise outings to new adaptations led by beloved actors, it’s set to be a stellar year for the genre on the big screen. Perhaps the most intriguing among them, and with the highest potential to be truly great, is Disclosure Day.
Steven Spielberg directs and wrote the story for this one. Despite the reveal trailer being a fairly gaudy two minutes long, it’s kept the story very mysterious. We know there’ll be aliens of some kind and that they’re most likely already among us. A stark switch from what we’ve seen of late, Disclosure Day is one to watch in 2026.
Pivoting from Bombastic Invasions
When it comes to aliens, more overt invasions tend to be the focus, lending films and series more of an action-adventure leaning within the sci-fi genre. The prime example, of course, is Independence Day, followed by War of the Worlds, Signs, Cloverfield, Mars Attacks!, and A Quiet Place. Beyond film, alien conquests are also the focus.
UFOs and the advanced tech of extraterrestrials take centre stage among other entertainment platforms, like the slots at bingo sites online. Alien Invaders and 3 Wild Aliens headline the selection, featuring zany creatures from outer space. Needing for their creations to stand out among the thousands of other slots, it makes sense that the invasion side was the focus.
On TV in the mid-2010s, Falling Skies and Colony once headlined a flow of sci-fi shows about alien invasions and occupations. Since, while some comedies have broken through, the more serious dramas have failed to impress. The books are excellent, but the 3 Body Problem show inserted holes it simply didn’t need to, while Alien: Earth was flawed from conception.
A Sneaky Shock for the Humans of Earth
Most films assume that humanity will, at least initially, be outmatched and outsmarted by incoming aliens. Our political systems, hesitance, and their superior technology will give them an edge. Some of the best films go further, showing the aliens as being so advanced that they’re already among us without us realizing a thing.
They Live, The Arrival, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and, in a more secluded way, The Thing, all lean into this idea, inspiring an additional issue of distrust to stop humanity from uniting. Now, by the looks of it, Disclosure Day will add its name to the ranks of alien subterfuge films.
According to one of its cast members, Colman Domingo, the film goes far beyond a sci-fi thriller about discovering aliens hiding among us. In an interview last year, Domingo said, “I think it was just the most beautiful film about our humanity,” and that the director fully believes in “[who] we could be.”
The marketing campaign that’s taken hold across the US, with its mysterious posters and now the equally intriguing trailer, all help to pump up the anticipation for the latest Spielberg flick to deal with intergalactic entities. With Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, and Colin Firth joining Domingo, this has the makings of another summer blockbuster.
