Adventure, ancient curses, and a long-awaited cinematic reunion are officially back on the horizon. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly set to return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell in a brand-new sequel to The Mummy, more than 25 years after the duo first brought the franchise to life.
The new film is said to be in early development at Universal Pictures, with genre filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — best known for revitalising the Scream franchise — attached to direct. While details about the plot, timeline, or returning cast remain under wraps, the project has already sparked major excitement among fans who have waited over two decades to see Fraser and Weisz share the screen again.
Weisz appeared in the first two films, released in 1999 and 2001, but did not return for the 2008 sequel, which recast her character. Her involvement in this new instalment marks the first time the original on-screen pairing has been reunited since The Mummy Returns.
For Fraser, the decision to sign on reportedly follows his career resurgence and recent return to leading-man status. However, the actor has previously spoken openly about the physical demands of the earlier films, which required extensive stunt work and left him with a series of injuries and surgeries throughout the 2000s. For years he expressed hesitance about revisiting the role unless the story — and the workload — felt right.
With renewed audience affection for both stars, a creative team known for balancing action and humour, and Universal eager to revive legacy franchises, the timing may finally be perfect for The Mummy to rise once more.
No release date has been confirmed, but production updates are expected in the coming months. For now, one thing seems clear: the O’Connells may have one more adventure left in them.
