Prime Video brought one of this year’s most anticipated science fiction series to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast and creative team behind Blade Runner 2099 offered fresh insights into the series and unveiled the first teaser trailer.

Taking to the stage were stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, alongside showrunner Silka Luisa and executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

One of the biggest talking points during the panel was how Blade Runner 2099 builds upon the world established by Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, while telling a story from a fresh perspective. Luisa explained that this new chapter is heavily inspired by both previous films as well as Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but places replicants much closer to the centre of the narrative.

The new teaser also revealed a very different Los Angeles. Set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, the balance of power has shifted, with replicants now occupying a far stronger position in society. The story follows Olwen, played by Michelle Yeoh, a veteran Blade Runner nearing the end of her life, who finds herself partnered with Hunter Schafer’s mysterious Cora as they investigate a conspiracy that threatens the future of the city.

During the discussion, Michelle Yeoh spoke about drawing inspiration from Rutger Hauer’s iconic performance as Roy Batty, explaining that she wanted her own replicant character to feel emotionally complex rather than simply robotic. Hunter Schafer also discussed developing Cora’s appearance, explaining that the costume design helped communicate a character hiding her true identity.

The panel also produced a light-hearted moment when Yeoh revealed that Schafer suffered a concussion while filming one of the series’ action sequences. Joking that she needed to buy her co-star a protective helmet, Yeoh praised Schafer’s fearless approach to the demanding role, with Schafer laughing off the incident as part of the experience.

With Ridley Scott remaining onboard as an executive producer and an eight-episode run arriving on 25 November, Blade Runner 2099 is shaping up to be one of Prime Video’s biggest science fiction releases of the year.
