Alden Ehrenreich: Five Roles He Could Play

A spate of articles over the last four days contained a somewhat disparaging quote from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Regarding Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo casting

A spate of articles over the last four days contained a somewhat disparaging quote from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Regarding Alden Ehrenreich‘s Han Solo casting. The quote reads “There should be moments along the way when you learn things. Now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that.” Referring to recasting the original Star Wars characters. Personally, I enjoyed ‘Solo: Star Wars Story’. I thought Ehrenreich did a fine job as the titular character. Helped as he was by a standout performance from Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. As well as Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emilia ClarkeBoth of whom were great. It’s worth noting also that Solo did fine at the box office. There’s a point to be made here about corporate interests stifling art and creativity. I just wanted to offer my support to Ehrenreich and the Solo cast and crew. And speculate over what other roles Ehrenreich could play.

The Corsair

Comparatively little is known about this Time Lord. Apart from their appearance in one 13th Doctor comic. We know the Doctor’s people can change gender. When they regenerate. So Ehrenreich could play a not quite trustworthy Corsair who could play off Ncuti Gatwa‘s 14th Doctor. Neil Gaiman has said that the Corsair laughed a lot. Perhaps the former Han Solo could play a more subdued and secretive version of this character. Who could keep Gatwa’s Doctor guessing as to where the Corsair’s true loyalties lie.

James Bond

A bold choice but I stand by it. The former John the Savage actor has in my view the coldness and the ruthlessness to play Britain’s favourite super spy. As evidenced by the Solo scene. Where Han shoots Beckett (Woody Harrelson) mid sentence. Ehrenreich could be a spiritual successor to Pierce Brosnan. Possessing as he does that coolness and detachment. As well as the ability to charm and handle any situation. While Ehrenreich might be seen as a long shot for Bond’s role. I think he could pull it off.

Wolverine

I’m basing this choice on the fact that Alden Ehrenreich has already portrayed a beloved iconic character in Han Solo who people said could never be recast. And has done well with it. For a lot of fans, Hugh Jackman is Wolverine. And can never be replaced. However, they said that about Harrison Ford as Han Solo. Nobody would expect Ehrenreich to copy Jackman exactly. Although I feel he would be able to put across Logan’s brooding darkness. And his devil may care loner streak.

Richard Mayhew

This role would require Ehrenreich to stretch his acting muscles. Indeed, Richard Mayhew is a somewhat mimsy young man who develops into a hero. It would be interesting to see Alden Ehrenreich’s take on this. I have no doubt that this actor could put across post-Ordeal Richard’s strength and confidence. Moreover, it would be intriguing for Ehrenreich to play a character that is at times more comedic. As I’m not sure if he has ever played a role like this. To my knowledge at least.

Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider

Depending on Sony’s plans for their Spider-Man universe. An Ehrenreich Ben Reilly could be a great addition to the MCU. Being a Peter Parker clone who goes through some deeply traumatic events. Alden Ehrenreich is good at portraying darker roles. Which is why I believe he would be good as Scarlet Spider. This would however require a considerable amount of setting up. From a storytelling perspective. With the multiverse now a thing though any version of Spidey could be introduced. I’d like to see this actor’s take on Spider-Carnage. As I feel he could show a truly nuanced portrayal of a web-slinger driven to villainy.

Did you enjoy the Solo movie? What roles would you like to see Alden Ehrenreich in? Please leave a comment and remember; there’s no mystic field of energy controlling my destiny. It’s all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.
