As reported previously ABC have committed to a series based on the 1979 movie ‘Time After Time’, which pits H.G. Wells against Jack The Ripper, but in modern day.
The film on which the series is based saw Jack The Ripper steal H.G. Well’s time machine and travel to 1979 where he found that his appetite for murder was far more common place than in Victorian England. Wells sets out after him with the intent of stopping him, but falls in love along the way.
The TV series looks like it will be taking full advantage of time travel and spreading the narrative out through more than just one time period.
Much like the film the series is very much a fish out of water tale in which Wells sees a future that he never thought possible. The movie version, which starred Malcolm McDowell as Wells and David Warner as the Ripper was directed by ‘Star Trek II’s’ Nicholas Meyer and saw Wells observing the progress that had been made with regards the women’s movement. It will be interesting to see how the TV series handles some of these topics. It will also be fun to see what H.G. Wells will make of things such as the computer, mobile phones and twitter to name but a few things that we didn’t have in the late 70’s when the movie was made.
The series is being executive produced by Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries), the drama promises a fantastical cat-and-mouse adventure through time. Which suggests that we could see several time periods played out throughout the show, which would be a departure from the movie and the book on which it is based.
The series also stars Genesis Rodriguez (Entourage) as Jane and Regina Taylor (The Unit) as Vanessa Anders.
