The anticipation surrounding “Doctor Who” Season 2 (2025) has ignited a flurry of fan theories, particularly concerning the resurgence of villains. Analyzing the official teaser trailer and other media releases offers intriguing insights into these speculations.

The Toymaker’s Potential Return

A prominent theory suggests the return of the Toymaker, an enigmatic entity first introduced in the 1966 serial “The Celestial Toymaker” and portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris in the 60th-anniversary special “The Giggle.” In this special, the Toymaker was seemingly defeated and imprisoned within a box secured in UNIT’s vaults. However, the Season 2 teaser trailer hints at the re-emergence of godlike beings, with the Doctor warning about “forces beyond this universe” and cautioning that “the games are deadly.” These references, coupled with visuals of reality manipulation, suggest the possible return of the Toymaker or similar entities from the Pantheon.

Sontarans: A Cryptic Tease

Showrunner Russell T Davies’s social media activity has further fueled speculation. In a recent post featuring an image of guest star Jonathan Groff alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, Davies included a potato emoji. Fans quickly associated this with the Sontarans, the classic warrior race often likened to potatoes due to their appearance. This subtle hint suggests that the Sontarans might be making a comeback in the upcoming season.

The Trickster’s Influence

Another compelling theory revolves around the Trickster, a villain from “The Sarah Jane Adventures” linked to the Pantheon of Discord. Fans have noted that the melody featured in the Season 2 episode “Maestro” resembles the “giggle” tune associated with the Toymaker. Additionally, the Doctor’s warnings about “the one who waits” align with the Trickster’s modus operandi of manipulating timelines and causing chaos. These clues have led to speculation that the Trickster could be orchestrating events from the shadows, potentially connecting to Ruby Sunday’s mysterious origins.

Other Potential Returning Villains

Beyond these theories, fans have expressed hopes for the return of other adversaries:

  • Vashta Nerada: Known as the “piranhas of the air,” these shadow-dwelling creatures from “Silence in the Library” could provide a chilling storyline.
  • Krillitane: Shape-shifting aliens who assimilate advantageous traits from other species, last seen in “School Reunion,” offer rich narrative potential.
  • Weeping Angels: Terrifying entities that send victims back in time with a touch, their return could explore new facets of their lore.
  • Sycorax: Warrior beings introduced in “The Christmas Invasion,” their reappearance could delve into their culture and motives.
  • Madame Kovarian: A central figure in the Eleventh Doctor’s era, her return could unravel lingering mysteries.
  • Autons: Living plastic automatons controlled by the Nestene Consciousness, their ability to mimic humans could lead to intriguing plot twists.
  • The Lone Cyberman: A unique Cyberman variant introduced in recent seasons, his return could further explore Cyberman lore.
  • The Dream Lord: A manifestation of the Doctor’s darker psyche, his reappearance could provide deep psychological exploration.
  • Daleks: No “Doctor Who” season feels complete without the iconic Daleks, whose return is always anticipated.
  • The Master: The Doctor’s archenemy, whose complex relationship with the Doctor offers endless narrative possibilities.

Conclusion

While these theories remain speculative, the clues from official trailers and media suggest that “Doctor Who” Season 2 may indeed revisit some of the Doctor’s most formidable foes. Whether through direct confrontations or subtle influences, the potential return of these villains adds to the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes developments with Disney+ could shape the show’s future, for better or worse. With major changes potentially on the horizon, Season 2 might not just redefine Doctor Who’s enemies—it could redefine the show’s entire direction.

I’d quite like to see the Boneless again. I think they could look phenomenal with Disney’s budget for the show.
