Synopsis: In Heaven’s Half Hour, longtime rivals Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk try to move beyond their darker pasts to serve New York. But as their histories resurface, they are pulled back into the dangerous world of Daredevil.
The Story
The opening episode finds Matt Murdock, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson enjoying a rare moment of peace, celebrating the retirement of a legal colleague. It’s a true Heaven’s Half Hour, with everything finally going right for Matt and his close-knit group of friends. But the night takes a deadly turn when Benjamin Poindexter, now adopting the persona of Bullseye, crashes the celebration and embarks on a murderous rampage that ends with the death of Matt’s best friend, Foggy. Matt quickly suits up as Daredevil to stop Bullseye, but he’s too late to save his friend.
A year later, Matt has put aside the Daredevil persona, focusing solely on his law practice with new partner Kirsten McDuffie. His life seems to be falling into place, though his friendship with Karen Page has strained. Complications arise when Wilson Fisk resurfaces, running for mayor. Skeptical of Fisk’s apparent transformation, Matt meets with him, and they agree to stay out of each other’s way. But when Fisk wins the election on an anti-vigilante platform promising to restore law and order, Matt begins to wonder: who will pay the price, and what will the collateral damage be?
In the second episode, Fisk, now the newly appointed Mayor of New York, learns the hard truth about the power of optics. He faces a crisis when the Police Commissioner threatens to resign, taking half the city’s police force with him. Fisk, ever the manipulator, finds a way to keep him on his side—by blackmailing him.
Meanwhile, Matt is called in to defend Hector Ayala, who’s been arrested for acting as a vigilante after stepping in to stop a mugging. Things take a shocking turn when Matt uncovers that Hector has been moonlighting as the vigilante known as White Tiger. As if that weren’t enough, the person Hector was trying to protect is now being targeted by the police, who are working under Fisk’s orders. Their goal: to have him killed, making it easier to convict Hector and set an example for anyone else thinking of taking justice into their own hands.
The Acting
In the opening episode, Heaven’s Half Hour, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio deliver standout performances. The scene where Matt Murdock and Fisk meet in the diner is particularly brilliant. The conversation between them reaches a tense stalemate, with both men warning of the consequences if either steps out of line. With Fisk’s strong stance against vigilantism, it’s clear things won’t end well for Matt Murdock.
Nikki M. James quickly makes her mark as Matt’s new law partner, creating a strong chemistry with Cox’s portrayal of Murdock. Her meddling in Matt’s love life also introduces Margarita Levieva as psychologist Heather Glenn, a character who looks poised to bring some complexity to the story.
Overall
For Disney, this marks season one of Daredevil under their watch, but it’s technically the fourth season of the show, continuing the story from the three seasons Netflix gave us.
So far, it’s looking promising. The brutality and violence are still very much present, as seen in the epic fight at the start of the first episode between Daredevil and Bullseye. Bullseye relentlessly throws knives and darts at Daredevil, just like in the comics.
This is staying true to the show that first hooked us a few years ago, and I’m eager to see how the story unfolds.
