Synopsis: A spell-bound Agatha Harkness regains freedom thanks to a teen’s help. Intrigued by his plea, she embarks on the Witches’ Road trials to reclaim her powers and discover the teen’s motivations.
The Story
After the events witnessed in WandaVision, Agatha finds herself Spellbound and has been living the life of Detective Agness O’Connor, who is working on a murder case. This leads her to some clues about her true identity. When a young man breaks into Agnas’s home, the veil that has been hiding her true life from her is slowly revealed, as we learn that the young Man is looking for some help from Agatha.
Now back in the real world Agatha and the young man look to recruit some witches so they can form a coven and unlock the hidden gate to the witches’ road where Agatha can hopefully reclaim her powers.
The Acting
Kathryn Hahn gets to give us a slightly different take on her titular character as we are first introduced to Detective O’Connor who is completely unaware of her true self. It is only when Aubrey Plaza comes along in her role as an FBI agent who is really Agatha’s nemesis Ro Vidal that the story gets going. The acting chemistry between Hahn and Plaza is undeniable and loads of fun to watch as we see the two women snipe at each other until the veil that has been hiding O’Connor’s true identity is lifted.
The second episode really sees Hahn kick into gear as we see her titular character begin to work her cunning plans when she puts a coven together out of a group of witches that don’t particularly hold her in high regard.
Overall
These opening two episodes do a respectable job of laying out the table for the story to unfold. As of now we know very little about what the main plot line is beyond Agatha getting her powers back. But it will be interesting to see how everything unfolds and learn more about Agatha’s enemies as the show progresses.
