Scifipulse recently had the privilege of interviewing RoseSnap. She is a Colorado based cosplayer and model who has been cosplaying since 2014. Rose got into cosplay to help overcome her social anxiety. As well as this, Rose runs SoCo Geek Community. A local group that hosts social events for cosplayers, anime lovers, nerds and geeks alike. Additionally, Rose has won the Royal Court NDK NYE Costume Ball 2021. During this interview Rose gives advice for first time cosplayers and talks about which cosplayers inspire her.
SFP: Was there any particular character who first made you want to be a cosplayer? If so, who were they, and why?
RoseSnap: So there wasn’t a particular character that made me want to be a cosplayer. I started cosplaying as a suggestion from a friend to help overcome my social anxiety. I did have a character I picked first over others and that was Lucy Heartfilia. I picked her because she was confident, strong, kind, empathetic, and helpful. All things I wanted to be or already was. So I definitely felt like I related to her in a way. She was also from my favorite anime at the time.
SFP: What would you say to someone who wants to try cosplaying but is not confident in doing so?
RoseSnap: My best advice for someone wanting to start cosplay is, do not overthink it and just go for it! It is honestly life changing and much fun!
SFP: Following on from that question, do you have any advice for cosplayers who want to cosplay professionally?
RoseSnap: For those wanting to cosplay professionally. My first thing you should know is it does not happen over night, it takes time, work, and consistency. Keep that in mind and prepare yourself mentally. It took me years to get where I am now, but it IS possible. It will be hard at times and you will want to give up, take a break (breaks are important), but do not give up!
SFP: Do you think there is a problem in the cosplay community with female cosplayers receiving unwanted male attention? If so what can be done about it?
RoseSnap: This has always been a problem for any gender of cosplayer from any gender of person, it tends to happen more often to females from males, but it is an all gender issue. I honestly feel there is nothing that can be done about it, this is because well, jerks will be jerks. I can offer some advice for those being inappropriately harassed by others though. If online, block block block! If it happens in person, say something out loud right then and there, it embarrass them and will most likely stop that behavior from them towards you. Speaking up or telling them to their face that’s not appropriate usually deters that kind of behavior. If it continues, take it further to staff if you are at a convention or legal action in other situations.

SFP: What is your stance on the screen accurate vs screen adequate cosplay debate?
RoseSnap: I honestly did not know this was a debate! In my opinion, you cosplay how you want to cosplay. If you want to be screen accurate go for it, if you want to go casual go for it, if you want to make your own character or do your own take, you go for that too! There is not a specific way to cosplay. It is up to the cosplayer, not the viewers.
SFP: Which cosplayers are you inspired by?
RoseSnap: My cosplay inspirations. I have a few. Knightmage is one. I love the way he just does whatever character he wants, he has such diversity in the cosplays he does. You can tell he just has so much fun doing what he clearly loves. That’s inspiring! There is also AMH Cosplay. She reminds me that no matter your age, cosplay. If its what you love, do it. She also clearly loves what she does. She inspires me to keep going! There is also Cap for Kids and Hospital Batman, both local cosplayers where I am. They inspire me to get out there and make others smile, they are both an inspiration for me when it comes to doing charity work and volunteer work with kids.
SFP: What would be your dream cosplay?
RoseSnap: I actually have one of my dream cosplays, her name is Firiona Vie. She is from the original EverQuest. A game I played a lot as a teen and in my 20’s. My other dream cosplays are Anastasia’s gowns from the animated Fox film. I have her blue one, I am wanting her two yellow gowns from the movie.
SFP: And finally, what 6 characters would you choose to save the world from impending doom?
RoseSnap: 6 characters to save the world from impending doom… I think for starters I am going to go with Deadpool. He can regenerate and can break the fourth wall, and he will be comic relief as well! Second I am going to go with Subaru from Re:Zero. He has the ability “Return by Death” this allows him to go back in time after he dies while retaining the memory of the previous timeline. Third I am going to go with Rimuru Tempest. He is strong, intelligent, has a ton of abilities and is able to absorb others gaining their abilities, and bonus he is a slime. What more can you ask for? Fourth, fifth, and sixth, I am going with the trio, Hermione, Ron, and Harry. They are like the perfect trio, throw in the time turner, and the Deathly Hallows, we are good to go!
Scifipulse would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks and warmest best wishes to RoseSnap for so graciously taking the time to answer our questions.
