Synopsis: In The Original Sinners. It all comes to a head as old adversaries clash, with New Eden hanging in the balance.
The Story
Picking the story up from last week’s surprising turn of events. The train is once again divided, but this time it is a division between faith and hope and the scientific need to test and prove everything. On Layton’s side of the train. Hope is the prevailing factor in that Layton is counting on his followers to have faith in the uncertainty of New Edon. While on Melanie Cavill’s side of the argument. She needs further testing on the numbers and wants to keep the train rolling until there is a more certain outcome. While the third side of the divide is Wilfrid and his people who just want to rule the roost.
Central to this episode is the debate between Layton and Melanie and their people. While Wilfred’s grip on the train still has presence but is greatly diminished to a point where Melanie is able to use Wilfred’s weaknesses against him. This allows for her and Layton to resolve their issue by agreeing to differ as they work together to put Wilfred’s plans of an uprising down while simultaneously deciding a course of action that allows for both points of view.
The Solution
Melanie and Layton’s solution is simple enough. They split the train in two. One led by Layton, which pursues the dream of new edon. While Melanie’s side keeps going until such times as there is more evidence of habitable land.
The Acting
We get a lot of solid performances this week as we see the trains split up, which makes for a number of emotional goodbyes. Mickey Sumner gets a defining moment as Bess Till is forced to choose between her loyalty to Layton and her recent love for Audrey (Lena Hall). Likewise, Jennifer Connelly and Rowan Blanchard share an emotional mother and daughter scene as Melanie and Alex part ways as Alex throws in with Layton and decides to take the leap of faith that her mother is not willing to make.
We also get a great performance from Sean Bean who is defiant to the end as Wilfred, who may be down for now. But not completely out. You get a strong sense that he will be back.
Overall
The Original Sinners delivers a great season three finale, which leaves matters in a really interesting place for the fourth season to pick up the story from. It’s already been revealed that there is a fourth season and it will be fascinating to see how that plays out. Especially given that we have recently learned that Clark Gregg will be joining the cast. The question is what kind of role will he be playing? To answer that question. We’ll have to wait and see.
