Synopsis: In Blind Spots. Kelly is horrified when the Ormfell building implodes, injuring many in the community. Including Joey. However, her horror quickly turns to frustration when she realizes that the hospital is overwhelmed. People are getting sicker, and no one is coming to help – including Supergirl who is busy fighting Nyxly.
The Story
The mini social justice story arc continues. As Kelly takes her stand as The Guardian. When Orlando and Joey’s new home of Ormfell comes tumbling down due to a blast of 5th-dimensional energy. Everyone that was caught directly in the blast becomes seriously ill. When Kelly reaches out to Supergirl for help in resolving the issue. Supergirl is too busy with Nyxly to see what her fight with the imp is doing to the working classes of her city. Frustrated by Supergirl’s obvious blind spots. Kelly reaches out to her brother James who sends in Diggle to help.
To make matters even worse. Ambitious politician Councilwoman Jean Rankin has benefitted from a wonderdrug, which acts as a siphon for 5th-dimensional energy.
The Acting
Azie Tesfai puts in a powerful performance as Kelly Olson. Whose world comes tumbling down as she is caught in the middle of an age-old fight. The scenes she has with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) were really strong. Especially the moment where Supergirl says she will deal with it once she has dealt with Nyxly. Then things can get back to Normal. That statement alone was pretty triggering as things need to become better than normal.
It was also great seeing David Ramsey return as Diggle, who provided a great sounding board for Kelly. Also, we got another great performance from Kari Matchett as the greedy politician Jean Rankin who gets leveled up in the episode. At least for a brief time.
Overall
Another strong episode that continues the social justice and black lives matter themes of recent weeks and present very well reasoned points. The speech that Kara makes to Kelly about things returning to normal brilliantly mirrors what politicians have been spouting for months about a post-pandemic world. This is double talk for things will not change but remain the same. It also illustrated Supergirl’s blind spots as she has become so enmeshed with the mainstream to a point where she cannot see the everyday struggles of the people whose shoulders she stands on.
