Synopsis: Long tunnels, remote hunting lodges, and creepy taxidermy are definitely not what the doctor ordered.
The Story
Having taken care of shaw with a giant magnet in the last chapter. Both Jessica and Sam set off cross country in Foggy’s car to find a hunting lodge where Selene has taken the Nova Noledi kids. As they make their way to the Lodge Jessica attempts to use some mindfulness techniques in order to calm herself down.
The Narration
A large chunk of this chapter takes place in the car as Jessica and Sam are traveling to the Lodge, which is apparently just outside of Woodstock. Yup, that Woodstock. Much of the narration is descriptive of the areas that they are driving through as well as some great back and forth dialogue with Jessica and Sam in which Jessica is trying to talk Sam into letting her go it alone.
We get a great sequence in which Fryda Wolff does a brilliant job of conveying the anxiety that Jessica is feeling as she narrates a moment in which Jessica is walking herself through some mindfulness exercises to calm herself down. We also get a little sound work here in which we hear a beat, which is faintly approximating a heartbeat.
Overall
Elsa Sjummeson-Henry provides a very character-driven chapter, which is mostly about the journey to the lodge and the anticipation and fear that Jessica and Sam are feeling as they set off to confront the energy vampire Selene. The descriptions of the wild Elk in the countryside as Jessica and Sam approach the lodge are spot on. But it is the descriptive way in which the inside of the lodge is described that amps up the tension. Especially as Jessica and Sam inch closer to finding Selene and the other kids.
We also get some nice text messages as Matt Murdock sends Jessica plans for the lodge and continues to ask that she approach discretely.
Overall. A really strong penultimate chapter, which has set things up quite nicely for next week’s season finale.
