Review: Released earlier in the week to coincide with the conclusion of ‘Game Of Thrones’ the soundtrack for the epic eighth season was unleashed both on CD and Digital formats.
While the final series of Game of Thrones has divided the fans. Some loving it and others hating it. I think it is safe to say that the soundtrack throughout the series has always been a cut above when it comes to other television shows. Ramin Djawadi delivers a soundtrack that conveys a multitude of emotion much as the series did.
This season 8 soundtrack easily surpasses what has come before. The CD kicks off with the classic opening soundtrack and then seamlessly goes into the haunting vocal rendition of ‘The Rains Of Castamere.’ From that point on the music, seamlessly flows from one track to the next without missing a single beat and follows the chronological direction that the series played out in. As with the series. The music changes part way through the run time and becomes much more urgent switching to a minor key with rapid tempo violin tracks that provides a dramatic contrast to the beating drums.
This is really heard during the climax of The Battle of Winterfell and the four tracks that follow. Eventually building to a crescendo as we get to the Night King. This particular sequence on the CD is definitely amongst my favorite pieces of music from just about any soundtrack. It conveys so much that words cannot possibly do it justice.
From that point on. The soundtrack moves to a more somber and melancholy feel. A lot of which is reflected by Daenerys spiraling into madness. But the music slowly takes us through that until it eventually moves toward The Iron Throne.
Overall. This is a wonderful soundtrack to listen back too. Indeed its fantastic hearing it when watching the show. But to listen in isolation from the show allows you to imagine things in a much different way to how it played out on the screen.
My only disappointment about this collection is the fact that we did not get the vocal version of Jenny of Oldstones. We got a few versions in the series. One, which is sung by Podric and the other, which played that episode out. It would have been fantastic to have had those as additions to this CD. But sadly they are not included.
