In a recent interview for The Telegraph Steven Moffat warned that the pending fourth series of ‘Sherlock’ might be the last visit they can make to 221 Bakers Street, but it might not be either.
In his interview the writer and series co-creator spoke of how lucky they have been in being able to get two big name stars in Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to continually return for the show.
Although Moffat “thinks it’s unlikely” that the show is “completely finished”. He realises that they have been extremely lucky to have done four seasons.
“I don’t know how long we can keep it going,” he admitted. “I’m personally willing, but I’m hardly the main draw.
“I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show – but it absolutely could be.”
“We do have two film stars [Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman] in the programme. They haven’t needed to do these jobs for a very long time. They’re coming back because they want to.
“I’m amazed that we’ve got this far. I thought that once they had become extremely successful, we would only get to do one more series.”
The Emmy winning writer admitted that it be nothing strange for the series to stop production for awhile and then come back again. Which in a nutshell means that the series could vanish from our screens for a few years and then return again. Which is pretty much how things have been for the series.
As a fan of this show. I’m happy to have shorter seasons and I’m more than happy to wait so long as the quality of the stories remains consistently good and not the mediocre rubbish we had for season 3. Thankfully last years Christmas special made up for that blimp.
But my point is. Less where ‘Sherlock’ is concerned is more.
