Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced that a brand-new Stargate series is moving into production for Prime Video, marking the franchise’s long-awaited return to television after more than a decade. The new series will be created and showrun by Stargate Atlantis veteran Martin Gero, with Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell as executive producers. Original film creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are also attached, underscoring Amazon’s intention to treat this return as a major prestige project.
Gero’s involvement has been widely highlighted in the initial press materials. He describes Stargate as “written into [his] DNA,” having started his career on Atlantis before building one of the most successful sci-fi franchises in television history. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, Amazon has confirmed that the series will premiere globally in more than 240 countries and territories, signalling clear confidence in Stargate as a modern tentpole.
For long-time fans, this new series represents more than nostalgia. With Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi contributing as consulting producers, there is hope that the project will honour the rich mythology built across SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe. Press materials indicate that the team wants to preserve the core elements that made the franchise beloved—team-driven exploration, interstellar politics, and character-centred storytelling—while presenting the universe from a fresh angle.
At the same time, the updated creative approach and Amazon’s global platform open the gate for a new generation of viewers. The production is positioned as both a continuation of the franchise’s legacy and a clean entry point, without requiring decades of prior knowledge. With modern visual effects, contemporary themes, and broad international reach, Prime Video is clearly aiming to re-establish Stargate as a leading sci-fi property.
For the first time in years, the gate is active again—and audiences old and new are ready to step through.
