Synopsis: In New Life and New Civilizations, an ancient evil resurfaces, Pike faces a life-altering choice to stop it.

The Story

New Life and New Civilizations opens with preparations for Captain Marie Batel’s farewell, as she departs to take on a new role in Starfleet’s JAG Corps. Her bond with Pike remains strong but bittersweet. Meanwhile, the Enterprise picks up renewed Vezda activity on Skygowan, a pre-warp world where locals worship the Vezda through Ensign Gamble, who has somehow escaped the transporter pattern buffer and resurrected himself.

Recognizing the danger, Pike leads a landing party, with Batel insisting on joining. They discover ley-line connections that could unleash the Vezda across the galaxy. Amid the crisis, Batel undergoes a startling transformation. Her past treatments grant her powers tied to an ancient prophecy: she is the Beholder, destined to oppose the Vezda. She confronts Gamble while Pike experiences visions of the life they might have shared — marriage, a daughter, even a family dog, and growing old together.

Ultimately, Batel embraces her Beholder role, defeating Gamble and sealing the Vezda’s threat, but at the cost of her own life. The Enterprise crew mourns yet finds renewed purpose. With a map of uncharted worlds, Pike orders the ship toward new life and new civilizations, honoring Batel’s legacy through continued exploration.

Acting

Melanie Scrofano took centre stage in this episode as we finally got to see Captain Marie Batel become all she could be. The moment where the galaxy appeared in her eyes was a striking visual, signalling the revelation that Batel’s hybrid DNA — a result of her earlier encounter with the Gorn — had somehow granted her knowledge of ancient civilizations that knew how to defeat the Vezda. While the writing rushes this explanation to the point of being difficult to follow, the actors sold it convincingly.

Anson Mount was, as ever, fantastic as Pike. We even got to see several variations of his trademark “big hair” in the visions of the life he and Batel might have shared had they found their happily ever after. More importantly, Mount’s portrayal of Pike’s grief, longing, and the crushing weight of destiny during those sequences was perfectly judged and deeply moving.

Overall

This episode felt like a bit of a mixed bag. It might have worked better with an extra ten minutes to fully unpack some of the metaphors and concepts being hinted at. While certain elements landed, others didn’t quite make sense. It was also bittersweet, closing the love story between Captain Batel and Captain Pike that began in the pilot episode.

At the same time, it felt somewhat bitter in how the writers handled the Vezda. They had been one of the most intriguing villains the series has introduced, yet here they were essentially written out. That saddened me, as it would have been fascinating to see the Vezda unleashed at their worst and watch Pike and his crew find a way to deal with them. Instead, the resolution felt a little too neat.
