In Review: Big Finish: Dark Gallifrey: Missy Part 3

Synopsis: Great events ripple across time. Soon, because of Dark Gallifrey, the renegade Time Lord known as Missy will be able to achieve the impossible.

On a remote and isolated planet, where technology cannot progress beyond steam power, Missy needs to find the Doctor. However, it’s very important it’s the right Doctor.

She wouldn’t want to slip up and meet an earlier incarnation by mistake accidentally. The consequences of that could be truly catastrophic.

Review: Dark Gallifrey: Missy Part 3 concluded Rochana Patel’s intimate epic. Throughout, listeners felt her absolute love for Doctor Who.

Story

The strength of Patel’s storytelling lay in her fearless blend of homage, deconstruction, and internal logic. Indeed, she firmly embraced the paradoxical notion that both everything and nothing were sacred.

In the process, listeners got darkly fun nods to multiple Doctors and multiple Masters. Moreover, Patel gave Missy her most satisfying character arc to date.

Additionally, she paid off her superb world-building in consistent, but surprising ways. Mortimer, Alisa, and Scratch all became fully rounded and layered in Patel’s care.

Most importantly, however, Patel answered the questions built into the fourth wall breaking. As a result, she set up truly interesting possibilities for the future.

Finally, please make sure to listen to the end. Patel continued the trend of a post-credit scene that the audience will appreciate.

Acting

The entire cast was excellent. That said, three performances stand out.

For his part, Jonathan Case played the different facets of Mortimer with nuance. For her part, Paksie Vernon made a delightfully complete meal out of Alisa’s development.

Undeniably, though, this chapter and arc belonged to Michelle Gomez. She invested Missy with the darkly chaotic twinkle that Doctor Who fans adore.

Overall

Big Finish fired on all thrusters with Dark Gallifrey: Missy Part 3. I can’t wait for the return of Eric Roberts as the Master next month.
