Synopsis: In Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power, With enemies closing in, the coven flees under the light of a blood moon to the next ghastly trial.

The Story

With the Salem Seven nipping at their heels. Agatha and her coven perform a quick ritual that enables them to escape under the light of the blood moon. Still, their escape is short-lived as they face another ghastly trial, but this trial is a lot more personal for Agatha than the previous trials. Using a ouija board Agatha and her group summon the spirit of Agatha’s dead mother who is looking for revenge on Agatha for killing her. After briefly possessing Agatha Evanora Harkness looks for another means of getting her revenge through Teen.

The Acting

Kathryn Hahn turns in another great performance as Agatha who at one point in the episode does a pretty funny impersonation of Mrs Hart when trying to convince the coven that she has been possessed. However, the mood soon takes a more sinister turn when the real spirit is revealed, which introduces Kate Forbes who is fantastic in the role of Evanora Harkness.

We also get strong performances from Joe Locke as Teen and Aubrey Plaza as Rio.

Overall

Another strong episode and perhaps the darkest episode of the show to date in which we see Agatha’s coven come face to face with the enormity of Agatha’s past crimes and soon find themselves feeling the consequences of their association with her. We get some Excercist-inspired visual effects during a fun sequence in which we see Agatha possessed by the spirit of her dead mother. The sequence that directly precedes all of this where the group is gathered around the Ouija board has a nice blend of mystery and humor, but the outcome will likely put folk off messing with an ouija.
