Synopsis: In Hope For Tomorrow. Supergirl continues to fight Nyxly for the remaining totems. But when Nyxly kidnaps William, Supergirl realizes she needs to take a more proactive stance to keep National City safe.
The Story
Picking the story up from last week. Alex and Kelly adopt young Esme and try to help her adapt to her new life with them. But with Esme’s powers beginning to come through. Alex becomes rather anxious and tries to help Esme, but just winds up putting a little too much pressure on her.
Elsewhere, Supergirl and the gang continue to hunt for the next totem. After last week’s show. Supergirl and Nyxly have one totem each. So the competition to obtain the Totem of hope becomes quite heated. As neither of them seems to be having much success. Nyxly’s little device that allows her to use some of her magic doesn’t seem to be enough. Whereas Supergirls long list of good deeds doesn’t work either. With two nations on the verge of shooting missiles at each other. It becomes more urgent that Supergirl manages to get hold of the totem. But once she does. The team comes to the realization that the only way to beat Nyxly is by destroying one of the totems.
The Acting
Chyler Leigh and Azie Tesfai put in solid performances this week as both Alex and Kelly become concerned parents for the first time. Of course, their performance is helped immensely by the effortless cuteness that Mila Jones manages to convey as the very young and insecure Esme. This combination makes for some of this episode’s best scenes.
We also get solid performances from Melissa Benoist and Peta Sergeant as the fight between the two superpowered rivals becomes more intense.
Overall
Overall Hope For Tomorrow felt kind of average for me as the competition to get the totems feels like it is dragging on a bit. Ultimately, this episode was saved by the B-Storyline of Alex and Kelly’s struggles with helping Esme feel safe with them.
