Synopsis: Captain Jack Harkness has always had his suspicions about the Committee. And now Wilson is also talking about the Committee. Apparently the world really is under the control of alien lizards. That’s what Wilson says. People have died, disasters have been staged, the suspicious have disappeared.
It’s outrageous.
Only Jack knows that Wilson is right. The Committee has arrived.
Review: Some of my favorite Torchwood episodes were done for BBC Radio 4, as The Lost Files, so I knew that universe would translate for Big Finish. That said, it took me a few minutes to get used to the format of “The Conspiracy.” Instead of the full cast audios produced for BBC Radio 4, Big Finish decided on a format more akin to The Companion Chronicles. John Barrowman narrated in the first person, supported by only three other actors, while other Torchwood regulars were referenced. It will be interesting to hear if John Barrowman and Eve Myles work together in the concluding installments or not.
Thematically, there’s nothing new here. A conspiracy theorist who thinks he’s selling bridges finds out the hard way that he’s actually been helping to build the real things. The twist on the mole in his organization isn’t new either, but the actors sell it, and the first person narration maintains the tension. All in all, “The Conspiracy” was a taught, well-acted set up episode in which we learn a bit more about Captain Jack. I especially enjoyed learning about Plexus Magazine, and I hope that it’s threaded throughout the entire series.
