A reboot of Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander has been touted for some time, with numerous modern filmmakers keen to do the cult classic justice. Upon its initial release in 1986, the fantasy action-adventure film was a box office flop with only $12 million earned against a $19 million production budget. Now, though, the franchise’s notoriety proceeds it and the prevalence of its themes in popular culture suggests a new film could be a hit.

Highland and Epic Themes Prevalent in Slots and Popular Culture

A good indicator as to whether a film has the chance of being successful in the modern age is whether its themes can be found in other booming offshoots of the entertainment industry. Luckily for the Highlander reboot, its concepts are found in slots that attract millions of players worldwide. Players at Paddy Power can find titles like Highland Reels, for instance. There are also epic historical-themed titles such as Shields of Rome and Gladiator: Road to Rome. Pair this with the casino bonuses for new customers available to encourage players to try new titles and there’s no good reason why a new slot based on a modern version of Highlander wouldn’t be a great way to boost the reboot.

There have been other Highlander games in the past as well, such as Highlander II: The Quickening and Highlander III: The Sorcerer, highlighting how the premise would work on different platforms. Many older gamers will remember the videogame tie-in to the first film, which was released for home computers in 1986 and met with high praise from movie buffs and video gamers alike.

Henry Cavill to Play the Lead Role

It was reported in May 2021 that Henry Cavill was in talks to play the lead role in a reboot of Highlander. The rumored film has John Wick director Chad Stahelski in the chair, with the American filmmaker already experienced at creating a cult classic series. The main draw of the new film would be Cavill, though, who has shot to the top of Hollywood in recent times thanks to his casting as Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

Cavill is also known to a vast number of Netflix viewers thanks to his portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. He has been heavily praised for his acting in this role, and it has boosted his profile massively. It’s no surprise that the British actor is one of the go-to stars for anything sword-related nowadays.

A Chance for Highlander to be a Box Office Hit

Despite being a flop upon its release in 1986, Highlander went on to become a cult classic and has spawned four other sequels to date. Over the last three decades, the franchise has acquired new fans because of this and the spreading out into other media.

It feels like audiences are primed and ready for a new release, and thanks to modern special effects, a reboot could be a major hit. It will also benefit from the popularity of recent fantasy epics like Game of Thrones.

There hasn’t been any official confirmation about the Highlander reboot yet, but there is a high chance that it will be released in the next few years. This seems like the perfect time for a new offering to drop and capitalize on the prevalence of the franchise’s themes in other media.
