Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) out this week, SciFiPulse offers its last minute predictions for the film. As well as assessing how we think the film will do, we also look at wider implications for the MCU. For example, there’s every chance the movie may see the title character, Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), crossover with other heroes. And, they may not be at all who we expect . . .

Hit or Miss

The MCU has time and again proved that the films which don’t seem as if they’ll be mega-hits still can be. One such film that was a potential flop was Guardians of The Galaxy (2014). The success was a result of James Gunn having, and executing a fantastic vision for the feature. As a result, the film did really well. So, we’re going to say that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will also fair well.

The “Other” Mandarin

We don’t know what became of the fake Mandarin. That character was superbly played by the legendary Ben Kingsley. His last appearance in the MCU was in 2014, after appearing in Iron Man 3 (2013) the year before. He starred in a “one-shot”, All Hail The King. That short (available now on DisneyPlus) is well worth watching, or re-watching, if you saw it when it came out. Many fans won’t have as it was only available as an extra on the Blu-ray of Thor: The Dark World (2013). The whereabouts and fate of Trevor Slattery could be telling . . .

Easter Eggs

Of course, we’ll get them!; but what we don’t know is what they’ll be, and how they’ll be weaved in. The writers at MCU tend to do a fine job of teasing what’s to come. No doubt, there’ll be things we miss. As mentioned, sometimes links to one film, or character, aren’t quite what you think they might be. Perhaps the likely link would be the upcoming Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness (2022). Although, it could also be Eternals (2021), which is the next one of the MCU films scheduled to come out, and soon.

Successful Support

Again, if we turn to previous films, we see many examples of smaller roles having great success. For instance, Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) from Thor (2011) was a huge hit with fans. So too was Jimmy Woo, who first hit screens in Ant Man (2015). What was great to see was the return of these two characters, and their teaming up in this years debut MCU streaming series, WandaVision (2021), that we reviewed. Hopefully, we’ll get some more wonderful, loveable “super supports” in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Sequel Set Up

One thing the MCU does is set the stage for what’s to happen next . . . Whilst there’s not been confirmation of a sequel, it would be very strange not to get one. Safe to say, we probably will. Whether the events in the main feature give rise to it, or if the inevitable post-credit teaser does, it’s likely to happen. There’s certainly plenty of material to draw from, as the character has a large comic catalogue, dating back to 1973. The movie could also open up even more possibilities, including the potential for streaming series, too.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is out this week on Friday 3rd September exclusively in cinemas.
