Sometimes the Man of Steel needs help. And, it doesn’t always arrive in the most obvious way, either! So, this week May The Verse Be With You pays tribute to one of Superman’s helpers. In Superman III (1983), Richard Pryor played Gus Gorman. Gus was far from a typical hero, but he came through in the end, which is what counts! Also, this week’s poem is also a tribute the late Richard Pryor, too.
The Man
Gus Gorman was a nobody,
tossed on the scrapheap by the man:
but Gus saw what they could not see
and very soon he made a plan . . .
He found half-cents which “were not there”,
inside a corporate system glitch
He made a fortune from thin air
and very soon was very rich . . .
His boss soon knew, but did not shout —
he used Gus for his greedy gain
He vowed they’d wipe Superman out
by a super-computer brain
They designed and made kryptonite
which split the Man of Steel’s soul;
it caused a monumental fight,
that on the world took a great toll
But then Gus Gorman saved the day,
choosing heroics over greed.
He smashed the computer death ray,
ensuring Superman was freed!

Superman III wasn’t the greatest of the Christopher Reeve Superman (the definitive Superman actor) era, but it’s still good caper!
