This week has been a big week for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ broke August box office records, filming is done on ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ serves a damn fine cup of coffee with lots of casting news.
The following contain spoilers! If you do not wish to know the ends of every movie, and the deep, dark secrets of TV shows, move away from the screen!
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
With the stellar performance of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ speculation on what the next installment will bring abounds. One question on the minds of many is “Who is Peter Quill’s father?”
“I think it’s pretty important,” says Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “I think there’s a reason we seeded it at the very end of the film like that. I think that would certainly be part of a next Guardians adventure. Certainly, that would be part of it.”
Feige said that he believes that the reveal will come in ‘Guardians 2.’ “I think that’s pretty important for James [Gunn] and would be appropriate in a [Guardians movie],” he continued. “I don’t think you’d spoil that in Cap 3.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Joss Whedon announced on Wednesday that filming on ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ has wrapped up. He’s still got months of post-production ahead of him. Rumors persist that he’s will not be back for ‘Avengers 3.’ Let’s hope that’s not the case. If it is, let’s hope he can fill the void with Doctor Horrible 2, television series (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be awesome with a few of his scripts), or other projects he’s had on the back burner.
In related news, Whedon talked about how the events of ‘Captain America 2’ would influence the Avengers sequel.
“The fact is, Ultron is a clear and present danger and Bucky’s in the wind,” said Whedon. “We do mention the fact that that is [Captain America’s] primary thing, but he is also working with the Avengers, too. We’re not ignoring it, but he definitely has to deal with a mad eight-foot robot, because that’s one of those things, you put it off and it just gets worse.”
Agent Carter
Hayley Atwell has confirmed that we’ll get to see Peggy Carter again in Avengers 2, shortly after she’ll have been on TV in ‘Marvel’s Agent Carter.’
Atwell is getting ready to shoot the Agent Carter TV series — which takes place after the events of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and her ‘Marvel One-Shot.’
The busy British actress said that her inclusion in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron came about while hanging out with Joss Whedon. “We went out drinking one night and he was like, ‘You know, it would be great to write something for you,’”she said. “‘And I was like , ‘Yes, Joss, it would! It would be amazing!’”
Keeping with the Marvel code of secrecy, Atwell won’t reveal details about her role in the Avengers sequel. Set reports from April claimed that she had filmed scenes with Captain America himself, Chris Evans, inside London’s Rivoli Ballroom, where there were a couple of “Lindy Hop dancing” extras.
In 2012, Whedon said that one of the best scenes he’d written for The Avengers was a “beautiful and poignant scene between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter,” which took place in the present. The scene was never filmed because Whedon felt the scene was “killing the rhythm.”
According to Comic Book Movie, the ballroom scene that was filmed included not only Atwell and Evans, but Paul Bettany, who plays the Vision.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Adrian Pasdar’s Glenn Talbot will be returning in the sophomore season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ The second episode will guest star Kyle MacLachlan (‘Twin Peaks’) as “The Doctor.” Reports are that MacLachlan will have a recurring role as Skye’s father. So is he one of “the monsters” Centipede’s Raina reported to at the end of Season 1, or will he be Skye’s father in some other context?
More casting news: Henry Simmons (‘NYPD Blue’) will have a recurring role as Agent Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie, a mechanic in his early 30s. Simmons joins MacLachlan, Reed Diamond (‘Dollhouse’) as baddie Daniel Whitehall, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, Simon Kassianides (‘Nikita’) as the mysterious Bakshi, and Lucy Lawless (‘Xena: Warrior Princess’) as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Isabelle Hartly.
According to executive producer Jed Whedon, Agent Triplett “will be around a lot.” Adding that Britt instantly sparked with fans (as well as Miss Simmons), executive producer Jeph Loeb says, “You always have hope for characters, then when people ‘pop,’ you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s cool’ and you steer toward that.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 Tuesday, Sept. 23, 9 PM ET, 8 PM CT.
Daredevil
According to reports, a source who’s seen some callsheets for the Netflix ‘Daredevil’ series says Rosario Dawson is playing a character named “Claire T.” Could this be Claire Temple, the romantic interest of Luke Cage?
