With great sadness, I report about the passing of Legendary Actor and Star Wars Icon James Earl Jones. The actor who was a mainstay in many peoples childhoods for voicing the iconic villain passed away at the age of 93.
In a statement, Star Wars creator George Lucas described Jones as “a most unique voice both in art and spirit”.
“For nearly half a century he was Darth Vader, but the secret to it all is he was a beautiful human being,” the director said.
“He gave depth, sincerity and meaning to all his roles, amongst the most important being a devoted husband to the late Ceci and dad to Flynn.
“James will be missed by so many of us… friends and fans alike.”
The actor came from rather humble beginnings and struggled throughout childhood with a stammer. However, his stammer would slowly vanish as he developed his love for poetry and theatre, which led him into an acting career that saw him play many roles on Stage, on Television, and in Cinema.
The actor’s first cinema credit came for a small role in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 movie ‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb’ in which he played the role of Lt. Lothar Zogg. From that point on the actors’ career would only grow and see him play such roles as the adult version of Alex Haley in the 1979 mini-series ‘Roots: The Next Generations’ .
Throughout the 80s and 90s, he would appear in hit movies such as Field of Dreams in which he played the role of a celebrated writer and 1960s icon Terence Mann. He also plays the tough disciplinarian coach Frank Couzo in the martial arts movie ‘Best of The Best’ and do a fun comedic turn in the Eddie Murphy movie ‘Coming To America’ as the traditional King Jaffe Joffer who was the father of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem. Jones would get to reprise this role in the less well-received Amazon Prime Sequel ‘Coming 2 America’.
Aside from his iconic turn in the Star Wars movies. The actor would also lend his voice to the hit Disney movie ‘The Lion King’ in which he voiced the role of Mufasa. This would be a role that would endear the actor to many children of the 1990s and would be a part that he’d reprise numerous times much like he did with Darth Vader, which he last voiced in the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Although I personally never got to meet or know James Earl Jones. I could tell from footage and interviews that he did that he was an extremely warm and caring human being and I feel that the world has become a little dimmer today with his passing. I always liked what this actor brought to his roles in whatever film or series it would be. Regrettably, I never saw any of his theatrical work, but I am sure it must have been just as good if not a better experience than seeing him on the big and small screen.
In closing we here at SciFiPulse pass on our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of this brilliant actor.
