In Review: Wonder Woman: Bloodlines

Synopsis: Witness the legendary origin of renowned Justice League member Wonder Woman. Cut off from her home, she makes it her mission to help a troubled young girl enlisted by a deadly organization known as Villainy, Inc., whose criminal members have their sights set on invading Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s paradise home. The battle will be epic, because if there’s one thing an Amazon knows, it’s war.

Review: Wonder Woman: Bloodlines is the latest entry in the DC Universe Movies series. Before I write anything else, I need to get my one major criticism of the film out of the way. As well executed as the story is, viewers are treated to Diana’s origin story one more time. DC and Marvel both need to process the fact that their modern audience doesn’t need linear, stand-alone origin stories for these iconic characters anymore. They should begin in medias res and fill in gaps through flashbacks.

With that out of the way, the story is very well executed as I said. I adored the nods to Greek mythology, which I won’t spoil because they’re plot points. Suffice to say, Diana and Bruce Wayne, both know where to find good help these days.

I also really enjoyed this continuity’s versions of Steve, Etta, and the invisible jet.

Rosario Dawson is near to perfection as Diana, and Jeffrey Donovan keeps pace as Steve Trevor. Throughout, Adrienne Moore makes an extremely memorable Etta Candy for the modern era.

For her part, Constance Zimmer delivers a very Machiavellian Veronica Cale, and I can’t wait to hear how she layers her performance going forward. My one minor quibble with the villain plot is that writer Mairghread Scott added in so many of Wonder Woman’s antagonists that they could run out of henchpeople in the future.

As ever, the animation is excellent. I also really appreciated the score by Frederik Wiedmann. His music during sequences on Themyscira was particularly well done. All in all, this was a highly entertaining outing.
