In Review: Wonder Woman (2023-) #27 – A War That Could Claim Diana’s Soul

Synopsis: After the explosive events of the previous issue, Wonder Woman rallies the cats and marches them into war against the nightmare that is Mouse Man’s army. But as this unsanctioned rebellion erupts, Diana risks far more than the battlefield can show—could it cost her soul… and her daughter’s life?

The Story

Picking up in the immediate aftermath of the previous issue, Wonder Woman has been captured by Mouse Man, who believes he finally has her at his mercy. With Diana chained and seemingly powerless, he demands she kneel before him. But Wonder Woman refuses, her will unbroken and her heart burning with barely contained rage. The situation turns even darker when Mouse Man reveals that he has taken her daughter—and threatens to let his rodents swarm the baby until she suffocates.

That threat shatters any restraint Diana still had. Her fury erupts, and she tears through her chains with divine rage, hurling Mouse Man through wall after wall of his own castle. He learns firsthand what Wonder Woman’s wrath truly means. Broken, unable to stand, he is now the one forced to take the knee. With his body shattered and his arrogance gone, he has one final chance to tell Diana where her daughter has been taken. The question is… will he take it?

Daniel Sampere delivers some truly solid artwork in this issue, punctuated by brilliant action beats throughout. The moment Wonder Woman’s rage erupts is especially striking, with Sampere capturing the fury in her micro-expressions with incredible precision. One standout panel features Diana standing amid the rubble of a wall she’s just hurled Mouse Man through — a powerful, cinematic image that perfectly conveys both her wrath and her unstoppable presence.

Overall

This is a fantastic issue; however, the synopsis posted on Comixology—which we included—is a bit misleading. It focuses entirely on Wonder Woman’s supposed battle alongside “cat people,” yet none actually appear in this story. Instead, the issue centres on Diana’s personal confrontation with Mouse Man.

We also get a brief but interesting side story involving the young girl Wonder Woman rescued. She’s now being held in custody by Mouse Man’s forces, where an official attempts to “reprogram” her with propaganda about Mouse Man’s greatness. Naturally, it doesn’t take, and the scene adds a chilling layer to the wider conflict.

Overall, it’s a fun and intense issue, but you’re left wondering whether Diana can get a grip on her fury before she crosses a line that could destroy her soul forever. I wonder if Mouse Man knows.
