Synopsis: In Vatican City, the world has been overrun by a vampire apocalypse, every man, woman and child dead except the two thousand tourists safe behind the walls and holy relics of Vatican City.
But as the vampires gather in their millions outside, how long can they hold out? Because the monsters can wait forever.
The Story
In the aftermath of a global vampire apocalypse, humanity has fallen. Every human being—man, woman, or child—has either been slaughtered or enslaved by the vampires. However, around 2,000 tourists have survived, sheltered within the walls of Vatican City, now under siege by the vampire hordes and their ruthless leader.
Inside the Vatican, a small human resistance is forming, led by Guido Cavelti—a young man who travelled to the Holy City with hopes of joining the legendary Swiss Guard.
Artwork
Per Berg does a fantastic job with the artwork throughout the book. I loved how the vampires are rendered in grey, shadowy tones, creating a stark contrast with the more colorful human characters. The depiction of Vatican City is equally impressive—Berg captures both its grandeur and the creeping terror of a vampire invasion beautifully.
The final image of the issue is especially eerie, showing the tomb of the Vampire Queen buried beneath the very foundations of Vatican City. It’s a haunting visual that leaves a lasting impression.
Overall
Mark Millar kicks off Vatican City with a thrilling opening issue, showing us how the vampires slowly take over the world—complete with glimpses of their assault on New York. The introduction of Guido Cavelti is handled really well, as we see him arrive for his appointment with the Captain of the Swiss Guard.
As for the tone of the book? Think Battle of the Alamo, but with vampires… and the Vatican.
Overall, this book is a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to read the next issue.
