In Review: Timeless – Party At Castle Varlar

Now in hot pursuit of a genius with sinister associations, the team weighs the consequences of Flynn's destruction.

Synopsis: Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus are shocked when they’re told the mothership has landed in Nazi Germany, but time is short and they’re the only ones equipped to kill Flynn and end his psychotic crusade. Now in hot pursuit of a genius with sinister associations, the team weighs the consequences of Flynn’s destruction.

Review: This episode sees the team finally landing in Nazi Germany where they have to prevent Flynn from handing nuclear weapons to the Nazi’s. Assuming that is what he is up to.

There main mission though is to protect scientist Wernher von Braun who would go on to be a huge asset to the US space program, but never face punishment for the atrocities he committed while associated with the Nazi’s.

While on this mission the team meet up with MI5 agent Ian Fleming. Who as we all know would later go on to create the ultimate of British spies. James Bond.

This is a fun episode, which plays out more like a caper than a spy mission, but does manage to provide some interesting and fun moments amid all the inevitable James Bond references.  One such moment being Rufus asking Fleming how he can be comfortable with all the lying and deception that is involved in spying.

We also have a pretty cool character beat in which Wyatt helps Lucy with her anxiety by telling her a story about what keeps him fighting, which acts as a cool through line to the end of the episode where Lucy gives the US Government her terms. She’s fighting for her sister.

The episode also gives us a few new hints with regards to the conspiracy involving Rittenhouse. While it is unclear what Flynn wants. It is suggested that something Rittenhouse does has an effect on US policy for years to come, which is possibly why Flynn is all to willing to hand Von Braun over to the Russions.

By end of the episode Rufus once again tries to get out of spying on his team for Mason, but Mason reveals to him that he is in too deep with Rittenhouse and pleads with him to stick at it.

If the car pulling up on Rufus by the close of the story is anything to go by. I’d suggest that Flynn is on the right side in trying to undermine them. Especially given how they seem to have strong armed Rufus back into line by threatening his friends and family.

But the question remains. Who are Rittenhouse and what is their goal.

On a closing note. We get a fun performance from Sean Maguire as Ian Flemming.
