From Image Comics and the Skybound Imprint, as well as the creative team of Robert Kirkman (writer & creator), and Charlie Adlard (long-time artist), The Walking Dead #137 with an issue title of ‘A Future Uncertain’ was a nice surprise for me as I have not been very thrilled with this recent story arc at all to be quite honest.
However, this issue seemed to hit the beat of the series that I have always enjoyed, even though there was not a single zombie to be found in the entire issue. What was great about this issue was the conflict going on between the inhabitants of the settlement, which Maggie Green is currently the leader of. Is Spencer’s plan to murder Maggie going to bear fruit and will Jesus kill him as a result?
Likewise we see things heat up between Carl and Lydia, the young girl captured by Jesus after she was walking around in the skin of a dead person, as she is released in Carl’s custody and Lydia in essence gives Carl his first sexual experience. What was especially great about the scene was seeing Carl and Lydia’s hands clenched in the throes of passion, much like Shane and Lori way back in the beginning of this series.
Our young Carl Grimes it would seem has continued to come of age, with issue #137 being a mile stone for him after being seduced by Lydia. I only hope it is true affection or lust and not a ploy by her to exploit Carl’s kindness. Likewise, what will happen between Carl and Sophia now that Lydia is potentially becoming the object of his affections!?
So I finally enjoyed an issue of the more recent Walking Dead comic series story arc and can only hope it continues to get better as I have been rather disappointed in the comic as of late.
