In Review: The Green Hornet/Miss Fury #5 – THE END IS NEAR!

Synopsis: The End is Near!

Cornered and defeated, the Green Hornet, Kato, and Miss Fury must put their differences aside and join forces once again when the true villain pulling the strings behind the scenes is finally revealed! But can they overcome their own fears and shared past to save the city from a fate worse than death?

The Story

Picking up where the last issue left off, Green Hornet confronts his former mentor—and the man behind the murders—the Silver Shrike himself: Javier Mercado, who trained both Hornet and Miss Fury. But while he once shaped them into skilled fighters, Mercado harbored darker hopes: that they would carry out their crime-fighting in a far more brutal, anti-establishment fashion.

As Silver Shrike and Hornet battle it out atop one of New York’s high-rises, Miss Fury and Kato form an uneasy alliance to take down Baroness Erica Von Kampf and her gang of Nazi goons.

Artwork

Federico Sorressa delivers some great artwork in this final issue. The fight between Hornet and Silver Shrike is beautifully illustrated, with the two vigilantes clashing in the shadows—and Sorressa really knows how to work with shadows. It adds a noir edge that fits the mood of the story perfectly.

The final splash page, which wraps up the series, feels well and truly earned. The issue closes roughly six months after Silver Shrike’s defeat, during which time Britt Reid, aka Green Hornet, has hung up the costume to focus solely on his newspaper. That leaves Kato and Miss Fury to carry on the legacy they all inherited—albeit uneasily—from Silver Shrike.

That last page teases a new threat, as Fury and Kato come face to face with a dangerous villain they might not be able to handle alone. It’s a clear setup for a potential next chapter, should anyone at Dynamite decide to pick up the baton.

Overall

“The End is Near!” brings this crossover between Green Hornet and Miss Fury to a close, but it leaves the door wide open for future team-ups—whenever Dynamite Comics and their stable of writers are ready to push the button. Whether that next chapter comes sooner or later, we’ll just have to wait and see.
