Waking Hours

Synopsis: This month on ‘Waking Hours’. “The Faerie King,” the next major arc of The Dreaming: Waking Hours, begins here! Heather After has a theory about just where Ruin’s lost love might be found…but the realm of Faerie is a dangerous place under the best of circumstances, and as Ruin, Heather, and Jophiel will quickly find when they cross between worlds, the circumstances there have changed quite a bit!

The Story

Having brokered a deal with Auberon in the last issue. The sorceress Heather After convinces Angel Jophiel and Ruin to accompany her cross into the world of the Faeries. Heather thinks that Ruin might find the love of his life. The Dreamer that he has been looking for. So they cross over into the world of Fae and see a much different place than they were expecting to see. The land, which is no ruled by Queen Nuala has a barren and wasteland look to it. Heather’s mission is to unseat Nuala so that Auberon can retake his throne. But the mission gets off to a bumpy start as Heather After and Ruin are seduced by a group of fae.

Meanwhile, Lord Dream is beginning to have second thoughts about having set Ruin free.

Artwork

Nick Robles brings some fantastic work to this issue. I loved the transitional panels between our world and the land of the Fairies. I particularly loved the sequence of panels in which we see Ruin and Heather After are getting gradually seduced to accompany some of Nuala’s fae folk. We also get a fun sequence where Lord Dream and his Ravan companion find themselves in Heather After’s apartment.

Overall

Although this story arc actually began about two issues ago. This feels more like the actual beginning. G. Willow Wilson does a fantastic job of balancing the dialogue between Heather After, Jophiel, and Ruin. I particularly enjoyed how resistant Jophiel was to going with them. But did so out of a sense of duty to them.

Overall. A really strong issue. I’m looking forward to seeing what Wilson and Robles will come up with for forthcoming issues.
