Synopsis: This month in ‘The Dreaming: Waking Hours’. The new ruler of the Kingdom of Faerie stands revealed-and it’s…Nuala? She may be one of the most beloved characters in the Sandman mythos, but she sure does seem, uh…how shall we say this…different? And amid this chaos, what secret from Heather After’s past will re-emerge when she needs it most?
The Story
Picking up from last month. Ruin and Heather After has an audience with the Queen who turns out to be none over than Nuala, but it seems that Nuala is not the real power. Something which Ruin catches onto pretty quickly as he unleashes his power. Meanwhile, Jophiel and the deposed king find their way to the palace where they have an interesting meeting with the deposed queen. Titiana.
The Artwork
The Artwork in ‘The Dreaming’ has been a visual feast throughout its run. The art team of Nick Robles and M.K. Perker continue to cast their spell. For this issue. The highlight has to be Ruins attack on the Kingmaker as snakes shoot out him and near envelop the Throne room.
I also quite enjoyed the flashback sequence where a younger Heather After begins to realize her powers as a sorceress as she attends the reading of a family member’s will.
Overall
G. Willow Wilson continues to cast a spell with this series and manages to keep me enthralled in the story. I really loved the sequence between Oberon and Titania. In which Oberon is disguised as a beggar woman and is hearing his wife for what seems like the first time.
I also quite enjoyed the final few pages where Ruin begins to realize his powers and takes on the Kingmaker in the Dreaming. It will be interesting to see how all of this will play out in the next issue.
