Synopsis: Fifty years ago, ORORO MUNROE – the iconic STORM – made her debut in GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1 – thundering her way into our hearts! On this day, in her very own solo series, she will host a mix of debuts, reinventions and guest appearances of FIVE legendary thunder gods: THOR, CHAAC, SANGO, MAMARAGAN and SUSANOO! But first, a mission to BRAZIL goes horribly wrong. How much more can our hero endure?

The Story

Sent on a mission by Tony Stark to investigate strange weather patterns and recover a dead pilot along with a batch of super soldier serum, Storm finds herself facing off against a giant anaconda—one that’s swallowed both the pilot and the serum, and is proving to be a rather frustrating opponent. But when the snake is suddenly blasted to ashes by a Storm God, things take a turn. Storm soon finds herself up against CHAAC, SANGO, MAMARAGAN, and SUSANOO—and the only god who seems to be on her side is Thor.

Artwork

Luciano Vecchio brings some fantastic art to this issue as we follow our hero hunting the snake through the Brazilian jungle. The flashback panels showing the giant snake swallowing the pilot Storm’s been sent to retrieve are particularly strong—they do a great job of selling just how terrifying it would be to be eaten alive by a snake.

Overall

Overall, a pretty good issue that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Storm by pitting her against several worthy opponents. I loved the opening few pages, where Tony Stark shares some banter with Storm as he tries to rope her into the mission in his usual roundabout way. The dialogue between the two Avengers is sharp and crisp, with a nice balance of humor and wit.

We’re left with a thrilling cliffhanger as Thor arrives to assist our hero—or does he? The question remains: is Thor here to help Storm, or stand in her way?
